Last Saturday I was thrilled to be able to spend time with my writing friends at the California Writers Club-Peninsula Branch. They invited me to do a presentation on what I lovingly refer to as, “The 15 Minute Fix!”
We had fun talking about flirtatious and creative ways to overcome writers block and subdue the struggle to put words together to convey your message.
Wanna know what we talked about?
- Something you already have the skills and tools to accomplish.
- A strategy which can be adapted to fit your writing timeline.
- A technique to create a foundation anyone can use to produce valuable content for any kind of writing whether it is business or personal.
The 15 Minute Fix is your commitment to set aside time to write at a specific time and for a specific interval in your journal. It could be ten minutes at lunch. It could be a half hour before you go to bed. You get to decide what you want your writing practice to be. You get to decide when, where and for how long. The most important part – besides actually doing the writing part – is that you set a timer and just write. Don’t stop to look up a word, correct a misspelling, or wonder if you are using the proper punctuation. Keep your hand moving and take dictation from your unconscious self. Invite your Inner Writer to take over. Take dictation…so to speak…and download details, events, memories, questions, concerns and imagining to the surface and record them in your journal.
There are no rules of what to put in your journal because it is your sacred place to capture those personal, intimate conversations for your eyes only. Once you have chosen your when and where to write, I would suggest that you make a habit of always beginning your entries with the date, time and description of your surroundings. This will anchor you, help you focus and let your whole body/mind/spirit know it is time to show up to write.
