January is full of new beginnings along with milestones and memories. It is also National Mentoring Month. The concept of mentoring is ancient. Homer described the original Mentor as the “wise and trusted counselor.” I have been fortunate to have some incredible mentors throughout this incredible journey referred to as “life.”
I’d like to talk about one special woman in particular who I have known my entire life and a new group of amazing women I had the good fortune to discover in March of 2017.
I love this picture of me in my polka dot dress. I’m eagerly smiling at the camera. And I’m joined by someone else wearing polka dots and the first person I want to honor as my original mentor, my mother.
My mother, Florence continues to be a source of wisdom and wonder to this day. She has a fabulous sense of style and passed that on to me. I had style modeled for me every day. Color and texture are as important as comfort and appropriate apparel. Growing up in Minnesota, we had the seasons to contend with and that factored into our daily choices. But even the weather didn’t seem to hinder her determination to look like a lady at all times. The hat and gloves coordinated with the coat along with the bag and shoes. Oh, shoes and bags. Yes, shoes and bags. I was taught to buy good shoes because when you are good to your feet, they will be good to you. I’m proud to say I’ve learned to be a Girly Girl from someone who carries herself with grace and dignity.
Coincidentally, polka dots come into play here as well with the new group of women who are my mentors. Polka Dot Powerhouse, is a Connection Company which focuses on building relationships among the members and building community. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a speaker for many of the local chapter meetings and at the national conference and have found all the women I meet inspiring. They are out to have an impact on their immediate community and the world. I’m so glad I’m a part of it.
