What is a Transformational Story…

June 11, 2023 By Mary E. Knippel

What do you consider a transformational story?

Does it have to be a dramatic life-changing event? Something earth-shattering? A life-or-death situation?

I know I’ve often described your transformational story as one that changed the trajectory of your life. I  hear stories that depict the individual’s perspective of one of the five major stressors we may encounter in our lives: (1) loss of a job, (2) loss of a loved one, (3) major move, (4) catastrophic illness and (5) divorce.

Webster’s Dictionary definition tells us that transformation is a noun: a dramatic change in form or appearance. It goes on to give examples of important events:  getting your driver’s license, going to college, or getting married.

I’ve had two eye-opening conversations about what constitutes a transformational story recently and I’d like to share some of my insights with you here.

While discussing finding your transformational story on a podcast last week, I shared my opinion that losing your keys could be a transformational story. Making the decision to not do something just because everybody else does it that way could be a transformational story. To wear white after labor day could be a transformational story.

My point being that we make so many decisions that seem to be just about us, and don’t have much significance. And yet, they could be the beginning of something so much bigger. All of the details of our lives are connected. It may take years before we see the extensive interconnection of decisions we make.

Losing your keys may have led you to be late so that you were not on the highway when there was big accident with several deaths and major injuries. (i.e. you lived!). Following your own heart could lead to you creating innovations used around world (i.e. Steve Jobs). Being a rule-breaker in one sense could become a signature statement (i.e. Emily Dickinson).

The second conversation about transformational stories I had was with a funny, sweet, dear friend. She is passionate about helping people and told me how she felt awkward at networking events when the conversation turned to your WHY. She said she understood the importance of knowing your Why, it’s just that she didn’t have anything “big” for her transformational story. She felt so ordinary, and her life events didn’t compare with someone who was homeless or abused as a child.

Here’s the thing; Your Transformational Story is THE TRANSFORMATIONAL STORY that makes a difference! No one else on this earth has lived in your skin and had the experiences you have had. You are the only one who knows that Ah Ha moment when you decided to make a change. And you know the significance of that change. That’s the story that has gotten you to where you are now. That’s the story that has made you who you are at this moment. That is the transformational story that taught you the skills you have today.

I made the decision to find ways to use my writing long before I had a Journalism degree. I wrote for the school newspaper, volunteered with my church and women’s groups to write articles, and edited newsletters. I started taking night classes before I quit my secretarial job to go to school full-time. A decision that had most of my family thinking I was absolutely crazy because “writing wasn’t practical.”

I didn’t do it the way everybody else did.  I celebrated my 30th birthday as a college freshman. Today I’m living my dream as The Soul Story Writer and Your Writing Mentor.

The mathematical definition of transformation describes a change of variables that are substituted for the original components. A change of variables that are substituted for original components.

What if we were to approach your transformational story by changing these variables?

Substitute…

  • insecurity with confidence.

  • fear with courage.

  • ordinary with extraordinary.

  • vulnerable with empowered.

  • timidity with tenacity.

  • awkwardness with grace and ease.

  • heartbreak with break-through.

  • fragile with compassion.

  • silence with your soul’s message.

I believe in Divine Timing. I believe we make plans and do our best to see that those plans work out. And we celebrate how clever we are. I believe sometimes something absolutely incredible happens and we shake our heads in disbelief because we never could have predicted that would happen. I believe a power much greater than we mere mortals knows the bigger plan. Whatever you call that power God, Source, Spirit or ___________ (you fill in the blank), it’s my belief that all our transformational stories are contained within that bigger plan.

Remember, Your Story is The Story that Makes a Difference. Please embrace that “ordinary” transformational story. Your transformational story is the spark that lit your superpower, which sets you apart and highlights how “extraordinary” you are!

Summertime dreams… Friday-five minute writing prompt

Summertime dreams…

Friday five-minute writing prompt

Take out a fresh sheet of paper. Natalie Goldberg uses a “fast-writing” pen. I suggest using your favorite writing instrument and an unlined piece of colored paper for fun. I use a fountain pen with purple ink. Some folks opt to use their computer. If that is your preferred method to write, then just open a new word document on your computer and go for it. The point is to keep your fingers moving for five minutes and not stop. I want you to experience how much writing can be accomplished in a short period of time.

If you get stuck, repeat the writing prompt Summertime dreams…
Or any other phrase that is comfortable for you. Do not stop to edit, correct spelling, look up a better word, or rearrange a sentence. Do not question what comes up in the five minutes: this doesn’t make sense, where did that come from, or what a crazy notion. This is a timed writing exercise so be sure to set the timer on your watch, phone, microwave, computer, or kitchen stove. Whether you use an egg timer, a No. 2 pencil and spiral notebook, your iPad, or even your iPhone, the theory is the same. Keep your hand and/or fingers moving and have fun taking dictation from your unconscious self. Make a list, hum a tune, write a poem, or create a short, short story. This is your time to explore and experiment.

Let’s talk about the story you have yet to share…

June 4, 2023 By Mary E. Knippel

It’s Effective Communications Month and I’m just wondering about the story you a have yet to share. You know what I’m talking about. You have a longing to open up about a situation or a cause that is close to your heart, yet you hesitate. Do you feel that you are at the end of your rope trying to figure out how you go about finding and where you would share your story? I understand and know exactly how you feel because I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to wonder if I’ll be judged because I’ve decided that the time has come for me to take a stand and speak up. I know that vulnerable feeling of waiting for the repercussions after my story is told and out there for the world to accept, digest, reject and dissect.

Yes, it’s scary to put yourself out there. And I also know that you don’t have to feel like you are dangling out there all alone. I know I’m never doing it alone.

I have been honing my skills for years, sharing my stories and supporting my clients in sharing their stories. I have the support of my own inner wisdom along with the expert guidance of coaches, colleagues, and, of course, my clients, who are my greatest teachers.

Isn’t it about time to share the story you alone can share?

Curious about how you get started?

I’ve got a suggestion for you. In fact, I have several for you to explore.

What’s Your Personal Memorial Day?

May 28, 2023 By Mary E. Knippel

Memorial Day is the day we remember and honor all the men and women who died serving our country.

Growing up I heard it referred to as “Decoration Day” because that was the day we visited the cemetery with flowers and flags for the graves of our loved ones. Daddy, (George Prescott pictured here and his Army buddies marched in formation and fired off a 21-gun salute. The high school bugler performed a hesitant and solitary solo positioned behind a distant headstone.

We remembered everyone who had fought for us…loved us…wanted the best for us…our family and friends who were our angels…whether it was with a potted plant from the Schmitz Nursery, with a bunch of lilacs from the bushes in the front yard, or dandelions picked from the side of the road.

Today, I’m suggesting that you choose a significant event in your life, a turning point, to remember as your Personal Memorial Day. Wander down memory lane for a half hour or an hour if you can. Be sure to have your journal handy to capture what comes up as you travel that road back to the old you… someone you used to be.

  • What was the life experience that changed the trajectory of her life?
  • What does she know now that she didn’t know then?
  • What is the decision she made at that turning point that transformed her into the woman she is today?
  • How has she influenced others by the decision she made on any one of her Personal Memorial Days?
  • Where is that woman headed now?

If you don’t realize it already, you have more than one Personal Memorial Day. I have several…the two times I received form letters about abnormal mammograms (last year my third breast cancer incident was announced with a phone call), moving across country twice because of my husband’s employers suddenly closing their doors, the loss of my father and then my brother. But I also have had amazingly wonderful Personal Memorial Days…our wonderful daughter (who has blessed us with a granddaughter), meeting many fabulous friends and stepping into leadership as a writer, as a speaker, as a writing mentor, and now as a publisher and compiler of an anthology. I’m living my mission of helping women’s voices be heard from the tiny whispers from soul to the finished book in their hands.

I’d love to hear from you. Please share with me all the details of your Personal Memorial Day. I’m waiting to hear from you!
