We are only a breath away from a significant day of faith and rebirth in Christian culture. The sun is streaming in the window and I am blessed to be in beautiful surroundings, enjoying good health and the privilege of pursuing work I love.
I believe we need generous amounts of all faith, forgiveness and a healthy dose of imagination to pursue and achieve our hopes and dreams.
Faith, of course, in the ability to dream of creating a new reality for ourselves. Drive, motivation, and determination to succeed are also necessary components. Whatever goal you choose, from changing a behavior to learning a new skill, you must first believe you have a chance of being successful or you wouldn’t try. Yes, I know there are times we try something and they don’t turn out exactly the way we expected. Hopefully, we can laugh about them later. As a young bride, I had the entire family over for dinner and remembered to set the time-bake on the oven, but not the oven temperature! I served 20 people impromptu appetizers of celery and peanut butter while waiting for the ham and potatoes to cook!
Forgiveness and compassion towards ourselves for those times when despite our best efforts, the results are not what we had anticipated. Perhaps something happens with work. My husband works in the computer industry and we have been caught up in the two sets of circumstances where the computer start up company failed to “start up.” Despite the frustration of finding another job and having to move to another part of the county, the silver lining is that I have lived in gorgeous parts of the world which many people consider vacation spots and have met some fabulous friends because he was forced to change jobs.
Finally, fortune cookies, carrying flashes of enlightenment, whispers of encouragement, and bits of wisdom. Whether you choose to believe the messages in the cookies are random or not, ya gotta love baked goods that deliver for the stomach and the heart! Whatever the affirmation, a bible verse, proverb, or folk tale, they have an impact on the recipient: have a nice day, you will receive good news from afar, or a penny saved is a penny earned. They were designed to be a breath of fresh air at the end of the meal, a reminder to laugh, and a connection to community.
Tell me…what do you have faith in…or do fortune cookies spell out your future?
